DPF warning light: when to follow the handbook or get help
A DPF warning can indicate filter loading or a system fault. The exact message matters; a motorway drive is not a safe universal remedy.
What it can indicate
A diesel particulate filter captures soot and needs suitable conditions to regenerate. Interrupted regeneration is one possibility, while sensor or engine faults can prevent successful cleaning. Soot loading and accumulated ash are different conditions, so repeated regeneration attempts may not solve the underlying issue.

Put the symptom in context
A registration check can show available MOT history and recorded advisories. It does not diagnose the cause of a current fault.
How urgently should you act?
Follow the vehicle's instructions for the specific warning. A flashing light, malfunction message, reduced power or additional stop warning may need professional attention rather than a regeneration drive. Do not attempt a forced regeneration yourself or park hot exhaust components over combustible material.

Useful observations before an inspection
Record the exact symbol and text, recent journey pattern and whether the warning returns after clearing. Ask about recent servicing and previous filter work. Do not reset codes before an inspection, because that can remove useful diagnostic context without repairing anything.

What a garage may test and what drives cost
A garage may assess pressure and temperature data, sensor function, soot/ash estimates and why regeneration was inhibited. Cleaning, a sensor repair and filter replacement differ in scope. Removing the filter is not a legitimate substitute for repairing the system.

What history can tell a used-car buyer
MOT records may show emissions or missing-equipment findings, but do not provide a complete regeneration history. Ask for invoices behind repeated filter complaints. AutoAudit can review available recorded signals; it cannot measure current filter loading through a registration lookup.
