Clutch slipping: signs, causes and repair questions
Revs rising without matching acceleration can indicate clutch slip on a manual car. Wear is one possibility; contamination or release-system faults can also matter.
What it can indicate
The clutch must transmit torque while engaged. Worn friction material, oil contamination or a release mechanism preventing full clamping can interfere. A high biting point alone is not a reliable wear measurement, and an automatic with a similar symptom needs transmission-specific diagnosis.

Put the symptom in context
A registration check can show available MOT history and recorded advisories. It does not diagnose the cause of a current fault.
How urgently should you act?
If drive is unreliable, there is a strong burning smell or the car cannot accelerate safely, stop and arrange help. Avoid towing, hard acceleration or deliberate high-gear stress tests. Continuing to slip the clutch can increase heat and damage.

Useful observations before an inspection
Describe when engine speed rises out of proportion to road speed and whether the pedal feel changed. Note recent clutch work or an oil leak. Do not deliberately hold the vehicle on the clutch to demonstrate the fault; a competent repairer can assess it safely.

What a garage may test and what drives cost
A garage may inspect operation and leakage before deciding on removal. Repair scope can include the clutch, release components, a leaking seal or flywheel assessment. Ask why each item is required. Gearbox removal and access often drive labour, so a generic parts price is misleading.

What history can tell a used-car buyer
Ask for an itemised previous clutch invoice and whether an underlying leak was fixed. A passed MOT does not certify remaining clutch life. AutoAudit can help compare recorded history and mileage, but cannot measure the clutch's friction material remotely.

Compare shaking during engagement with loss of transmitted drive.
- Gearbox oil leak
A leak needs identification; it does not automatically prove contamination.
