Automatic gearbox jerking: identify the transmission first
Harsh shifts or jerky take-up can have several causes. A torque-converter automatic, CVT, dual-clutch and automated manual need different assessments.
What it can indicate
Temperature, control behaviour, fluid condition, mounting movement or a mechanical problem can influence engagement. An engine hesitation can also feel like a gearbox fault. Do not assume that every DSG, DCT or CVT complaint has the same solution or service interval.

Put the symptom in context
A registration check can show available MOT history and recorded advisories. It does not diagnose the cause of a current fault.
How urgently should you act?
Stop safely for a transmission stop warning, loss of drive, severe banging or leaking fluid. Follow the exact cooling instruction if the vehicle reports overheating. Do not hold a dual-clutch car on an incline with the accelerator or repeatedly stress it to reproduce the symptom.

Useful observations before an inspection
Note whether the problem occurs selecting drive, changing between particular gears, manoeuvring or after warming up. Ask for the gearbox identity and service records. Brief differences in shift feel are not enough to condemn a transmission, but repeated severe behaviour needs an explanation.

What a garage may test and what drives cost
A specialist may compare engine and transmission fault data, check mountings and inspect fluid using the correct procedure. Software, servicing and internal repair are different interventions. Ask for evidence behind a proposed flush or replacement; neither is a universal cure.

What history can tell a used-car buyer
MOT history usually cannot confirm transmission health or completed fluid servicing. Request itemised invoices and evidence that a prior complaint was resolved. AutoAudit supplies available history, not a live gearbox diagnostic test or remaining-life prediction.

Check an associated leak independently.

The source may be the engine or driveline rather than a shift.
